Cathleen Sweeney of Fluid Power Barre Fitness

While barre is widely known as a challenging workout, my hope for the future is that it becomes recognized as a healing modality as well.

I believe that movement is the medicine for anything!

Barre is so ideal because it is no-impact, there’s intention and purpose behind each position and exercise, and there are limitless modifications to use when necessary.

When my 80 year old mother injured her knee by a fall recently, her Orthopedist note read “Patient is active in regular barre workout classes. Therefore, I do not feel the patient needs formal physical therapy.. She can continue to perform barre classes immediately!”

This gave me great satisfaction and hope for the future of barre.

I find and feel support through others in the industry who honor the integrity of barre, and passionately carry it forward!

I was drawn to barre, because it immediately spoke to my dancer brain. I loved the efficiency in each hour class. I could access this deep, intense strength in every muscle, but also feel lengthened, supple and aligned. The structure of class without a script was also really appealing to me as a teacher. I appreciated the room for my own unique delivery and creativity, while staying true to the format I learned from Lis and Fred.

I’ve taught barre for more than 20 years, the last 16 as the principal teacher and trainer at my own barre studio, Fluid Power Barre Fitness, Long Island, NY

The way I describe Fluid Power is “using barre technique as the vehicle to move toward greater self awareness and self development, while becoming stronger and more flexible than ever! “

I hold certifications and continue to study somatic movement, fascial anatomy and energy medicine. These naturally weave into my barre practice and teaching. So even after two decades, barre work keeps becoming more interesting, richer, and deeper than when I started! I know it will always continue to be this way!
